What the heck is a life coach? Get the 411 here.
I love the moment when the airplane wheels leave the ground. It feels like the adventure has finally begun. I truly love flying. But for some of you, this certainly isn’t the case.
The fear of flying, termed pteromerhanophobia (trying saying that three times fast), is one of the most common phobias. It can feel debilitating for someone who misses out on experiences that can only be achieved by the use of a plane. Think about having to miss destination weddings, conferences overseas or family vacations because of not knowing how to overcome this fear.
With planes being hijacked for terrorist attacks and recently with the Malaysian Airlines flight crashing, it is understandable that many will opt for road trips over high priced tickets in business class. However, if you want to explore all that this magnificent world has to offer, let me give you three methods to help you conquer your fear and have you booking a flight in no time.
Method 1. Educate Yourself. Did you know air travel is one of the safest methods of transport? Some airlines offer courses on how to get over the fear of flying by teaching you all about how air travel works. Why not turn your fear into an opportunity to learn something new?
Method 2. Don’t Give Yourself Another Option. I may be unconventional in some of my coaching methods. However, I do believe that the best way to overcome your fears is to face them. And the only way for this method to be successful is to burn all of your bridges. Don’t give yourself any other option. Book a trip to a destination that you know you cannot get to without flying. Let the airline know that this is a big deal for you. Get the stewardess on your side. Insider’s tip: If you let the airline staff know about your fear, they will treat you like royalty and make your experience a memorable one!
If you’re ready to face your fear and create that destination vacation, the Come Alive Workshop is the perfect place for you to clarify the steps that you will need to take. Learn all about this 4-part online workshop I’m offering starting in August here!
Method 3. Turn to the pros. As a Life Coach with a background in psychology, I know when I’m not the best person to support my client. I had a client who was living with depression and not taking his medication consistently. I was able to identify that he wasn’t getting the help that he needed and I guided him towards going back to see his psychologist. My commitment is for you to live a life that you love. In the event that your fear of flying is a debilitating phobia, I recommend that you seek out counsel from a psychologist who practices Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
