Some days, your head just isn't in the game (whatever the game may be). But there are things in life that need to get done no matter what's whirling around us.
We have to eat.
We have to show up to work and get sh*t done.
Learning to refocus is an essential tool that can bring us more success as well as help us to control our impulses. Using a mantra and a mudra, we can help to crystalize our desire to more be focused.
First, have a seat and try to bring yourself to the present, if only for a moment. The more scattered we are, the shorter the time we spend in the present. It's good to start by noticing.
As you close your eyes, place your hands in kubera mudra. This is when you put the thumb on each hand together with the index finger and middle finger. The other fingers will just rest lightly in the hands. This mudra helps with sticking to what we intend and facilitates with concentration.
As your mudra, repeat to yourself Om Vardhanam Namah. This roughly translates to "to nourish the universe and the universe nourishes me."
Repeat it silently in your head until the rest of your thoughts calm.
When you have been able to focus on a mantra for some time, you can indeed focus on anything you want once you open your eyes.
Like work, perhaps.
