So you let “just one drink” become “one too many.” Now you’re paying for it. Now you’re wondering why alcohol exists.
There are so many techniques out there to rid yourself of a hangover, from hair of the dog to greasy breakfasts. Keep hydrated and try this meditation to increase your positivity and awareness, so you don’t take your mood out on anyone in your path.
Have a seat (or lie down if it’s that kind of hangover). Meditation will allow your body to rest deeply, which is precisely what it needs at this moment. If you have partied hard, you also need to rest hard. Take a few deep breaths until you feel a little calmer and a little less grumpy.
Pinpoint a part of your body that is feeling the effects of last night.
Start to direct your breath from this place. It’s almost like you are breathing from this place rather than from your lungs. Stay there for at least a couple of minutes.
Then move on to another area. Pounding head? Churning stomach? Rather than trying to distract yourself from what your body is experiencing, experience it directly and breathe into it.
Take your time, telling each part of your body that you are on the same team.
The Zen monk Thich Nhat Hahn has simple advice: “Smile, breathe and go slowly.” Particularly on a day when you’re feeling slower than normal, these are words to live by.
