Never toss a wine cork! Create a souvenir of your wine drinking with this beautiful bath mat that feels great under your feet. Its earthy, chic and will give your bathroom that extra something you’ve been looking for.
Plus, corks are biodegradable and renewable, so you can feel good about your homemade mat every time you step out of the shower.
What You’ll Need
Step 1: Preparation
Begin by cutting your corks. Make sure your knife is sharp and be careful! Keep the pairs together if you wish to lay them side-by-side. Once youre done cutting, lay your shelf liner on a flat work surface.
Step 2: Arrange your Corks
Create a frame of corks around the edges of the liner, to the size of your desired mat. Then fill in the spaces with your corks. You can arrange them in straight lines, in pairs (as I did), or in zigzag rows. For zigzag rows, you will have to trim some of your corks to fit.
Step 3: Glue ’em Down
Once youre happy with the layout of your corks, glue down the frame. Apply a squiggle or rectangle of glue to the underside of the cork. Place and press down firmly. Wipe away excess glue before it hardens. After completing the frame, start on remaining corks, working in rows. You might have to rearrange a few corks, or trim some, to make sure they fit nicely.
Step 4: Trim & Check
Trim off any excess shelf liner with scissors or a sharp knife. Check for any loose corks and apply more glue if you find any.
Step Five: Admire
Place on your bathroom floor for all to admire!
Just a note: corks arent absorbent. To lengthen your mats life you should wipe down the floor and mat if it gets waterlogged. If any corks pop off over time, simply glue them back on with hot glue.
