Even after we become adults, it doesn’t get any easier to wait for something we’re excited about. Whether it’s your wedding day or an upcoming vacation, sometimes it becomes hard to sleep when we can’t wait. any. longer.
Sleeping will not only keep your head screwed on but it will also make your anticipated day come even faster. The next time you find yourself restless, tossing and turning in hope and joy, try this simple breath meditation to ground yourself back into rest.
The trick is to breathe in three times in a row, then take a big exhale through the mouth (if you have a bedmate, you might want to exhale through the nose so as not to disturb them).
In, in, in, ouuuuuttt. Draw out the exhalation as long as you can.
One breath certainly won’t be enough, so try it again. One…two…three…exhale.
Continue to do this until you find that you are less in your head and more in your body. You may even start drifting off.
The anticipated day will come, but having too much foresight can keep you out of the present joys that are around you. If you’re living too much in the future, breathe to bring yourself back to the now.
