We all like to believe that we can roll with the punches. We are all cool as cucumbers and we have our s@#t together. Nothing can take us down! We pin quotes to our Instagram feeds and we live them, baby!
Until we really have to change.
Life can get comfortable and lovely. We get ourselves into grooves where things feel sweet, but suddenly we need to get used to a new job, new illness, new lover. And even though people may parrot to us “change is good!”, it can feel discombobulating and unsettling.
It is time to settle.
For this meditation, don’t expect anything new from yourself. Don’t re-invent the wheel or teach yourself something new. Don’t assume the position you take to be particularly interesting or even well aligned. It just has to suit you at this moment.
Then close your eyes.
As you close your eyes, you may find that your thoughts race faster than a NASCAR rally. The self likes trying to find equilibrium and in a time of change, most of us become problem solvers.
Don’t try to control the change. Try to feel the change in your body. Where do you feel unsettled physically?
Now here is the hard part: try your best not to run away.
Sit with the part of yourself that wants an easy fix and wants to return to what you knew. Sit in the discomfort. Meditation doesn’t always feel awesome but it is meant to be authentic.
As you do your best not to ignore yourself, guess what? You may find the inner gripping loosening.
The trick is not to expect it, yet to allow yourself to be human. You may need many sessions like this. You may need just one. The presence itself is healing, and in no time at all, you will feel grounded again.
Until the next change…
