Every year, I venture up-coast and in-land to the fertile fields aroundPemberton, BC.I love to visit small local farms to poke around, chill out and enjoy the bounty of the fall harvest.
If you’re into eating local this is one of the best ways get acquainted withwhere your food comes from, how it’s grown and who grows it.
Pemby is stunning. Graced by natural wonders like Mt. Currie and the Lilloet River, this spot is indeed picturesque. The landscape is dotted with country abodes featuring family farms, orchards, and my favourite, the u-pick farms.
North Arm Farmgrows everything from earthy potatoes and garlic to succulent strawberries and mouth-watering raspberries. Although the main berry-picking season has passed, North Arm has a crop of fall raspberries that fruit much later in the growing season. These are what I’m after.
One of the best parts of these farm visits is the intentional opportunity to be out in nature – sun shining, birds chirping, bees buzzing. And that’s it. To rove among the rows of bushes surrounded by the hum and thrum of life, quiet moments interspersed.
The perfect raspberry-picking image in my minds eye. Completely relaxed and focused. Everything falls away. There you are, just picking, moving, breathing – totally in the moment.
My goal was to pick enough raspberries that I can freeze some to last the next few months of smoothie-making, preserve some to eat on my toast and yogurt, and have a small supply to keep fresh in the fridge to top off granola and make a few fruit crisps.
Im happy to report that I accomplished my goal in under 2 hours of picking. Check out the pictorial posted on ourFacebookpage for a full account of a fabulous day on the farm and all the goodies it brought.
Happy fall harvesting tuja community!
