The Good-For-You Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter Smoothie

:Meaghan Eady: The Good-For-You Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter Smoothie
Sooooo… how’s that New Year’s cleanse going?

If you’re anything like me, you may have fallen off the wagon a couple of times during those afternoon chocolate cravings or when you just can’t stand to look at another bowl of brown rice.

Lo and behold – a remedy.

This smoothie is so delicious and satisfying I hereby give you permission to make it your cleansing crutch.

Zucchini and avocado are the most obvious cleanse-friendly ingredients, both adding fibre, smooth texture and good fat.

Nut butter and hemp hearts bump up those healthy fats and bring some protein into the picture. You can use roasted or raw almond butter if you have issues with pb.

Regarding the chocolate, I chose to use one part raw cacao to 2 parts cocoa. I find the cocoa gives it a more robust chocolate flavour. If you’re a real nutritional stickler, you can use all parts raw cacao and forget about the cocoa. The jury’s still out for me on whether or not cocoa is actually harmful in this proportion. More processed, yes, but harmful, I’m not so sure. (Do comment below if you have any opinion or insight!)

To sweeten the bitterness of the chocolate, dates were a natural choice. They are very sweet but also have lots of great vitamins, minerals and fibre wound into them so that when digested, the sugars are released slowly, keeping your insulin production stable.

Ingredients

Every organic bit counts!

2 inch chunk of zucchini
1/4 of a medium to small avocado
2 large soaked medjool dates (3 if a smaller variety)
1 Tbsp smooth natural peanut butter (or almond butter)
1 Tbsp hemp hearts
1 heaping tsp raw cacao powder
2 tsp cocoa powder
Small pinch of sea salt
1 cup of almond milk (add more to thin out if desired)

Makes one serving.

Blend until smooth and even.

Savour this decadent treat while curbing those cravings, cheat-free.
