Discovering the Secrets in Your Stomach with The American Gut Project

What's in your gut right now? Not just your last meal, but all of the other stuff too? One scientist thought this was such an interesting question, he set out to examine as many gut-environs as he could. And, he wants to get a look at yours too.

Dr. Rob Knight is a professor at the BioFrontiers Institute in the University of Colorado in Boulder. He's been mapping the guts of Americans (and some Canadians too) for the past two years. He wants to see if the microbes living in our stomachs might reveal some secrets about our modern diet and its relationship to diseases like obesity, diabetes and even multiple sclerosis.

It's called the American Gut Project and in our latest podcast, host Tim Wohlberg chats with Dr. Rob Knight to try to better understand the secrets our stomach microbes hold. Do they know the true story of our health? What relationship do they have to our digestion and our sleep and activity levels? Can changing our microbial make-up shift us to better health?

Tim discovers that those little microbes can have a major impact on how we feel from day to day, how we gain or lose weight, how we interact with medication, and how susceptible we are to disease. We've got a gut feeling that you'll be fascinated by what's going on in that belly of yours.

Think you've got spectacular stomach flora? Or maybe you think microbes are a mess? Whether you've got a gloomy or a glowing one, you can get your gut into the program by checking out The American Gut Project at the Human Food Project (open to everyone on the planet). And, don't worry, you won't just be a lab rat - they'll actually share the secrets of your gut with you.

Did you find our interview about microbes to be macro interesting? Why not belly up to iTunes and give us five big stars.
